Paris leads in walking mobility as global city indices rank major metropolises
A new study by the Atelier parisien d’urbanisme (Apur) identifies Paris as a global leader in pedestrian mobility. Comparing seven major metropolises, the report found that 56% of trips within Paris are made entirely on foot, significantly outpacing London, Berlin, Amsterdam, and Tokyo. This trend coincides with a decline in individual car usage, which now accounts for only about 8% of trips in the city center.
Separately, the Oxford Economics Global Cities Index has released its 2026 rankings, evaluating 1,000 urban areas across 163 countries based on economics, human capital, quality of life, environment, and governance. New York maintains the top global position, followed by London and Paris. In India, Thrissur emerged as the highest-ranked city in Kerala, placing 477th globally and leading several other regional urban centers in the index.
