Paris Marx critiques Big Tech’s AI data center expansion
Tech journalist Paris Marx discusses his new book, ‘Hyperscale: The Ambition and Excess of Big Tech’s Data Empires’, which examines the environmental and social costs of expanding artificial intelligence infrastructure.
Marx argues that major technology companies are abandoning previous climate leadership commitments to facilitate the massive buildout of generative AI data centers. He notes that when companies face difficulties connecting to existing electrical grids, some have pivoted to constructing on-site gas plants, which increases reliance on fossil fuels.
Furthermore, Marx critiques the industry focus on theoretical existential risks posed by superintelligent AI. He describes these concerns as a mix of “science fiction and delusion” that serves to distract from the immediate, tangible harms caused by current generative AI products and the resource extraction from vulnerable communities.
