Paris merchants face recovery after widespread looting

Parisian business owners are struggling to recover following widespread looting and vandalism on October 17. In the 11th arrondissement near Place de la République, retailers reported hours of destruction, with some businesses losing tens of thousands of euros in merchandise.

Victims expressed frustration over the perceived lack of police intervention. Some shopkeepers reported that law enforcement failed to arrive during the height of the looting, while others claimed they were told officers were occupied elsewhere. In response to the perceived abandonment by the state, some local merchants have reportedly turned to self-defense measures, such as carrying baseball bats and tear gas.

Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez acknowledged a “lack of anticipation” regarding the deployment of security forces, noting that personnel numbers were insufficient to manage the scale of the unrest. While much of the damage was concentrated in Paris, reports indicate similar violence and destruction occurred in other French cities, including Marseille, Lyon, Bordeaux, Nice, and Limoges.
