Paris petition seeks ‘persona non grata’ status for Javier Milei

A petition has been launched in Paris calling for Argentine President Javier Milei to be declared ‘persona non grata’ in the city. The movement, which includes politicians, intellectuals, and artists, seeks to prevent any official reception or distinction for Milei during his planned visit between late September and early October.

Signatories, including Parisian councilors Rodrigo Arenas and Geneviève Garrigos, criticize Milei’s administration for its radical austerity policies, the dismantling of public services, violations of women’s rights, and police repression. The petition also accuses the president of relativizing crimes committed during Argentina’s military dictatorship.

Additional concerns were raised regarding the management of the Casa Argentina at the Cité Internationale Universitaire de Paris. The Paris City Hall has previously requested an investigation by French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot into the institution following reports of controversial expulsion decisions and the removal of a plaque honoring those disappeared during the dictatorship. Barrot stated that negotiations with Argentine authorities regarding the residence are ongoing.
