Paris police remove controversial speed camera at Porte de Montreuil

The Paris Police Prefecture has announced the removal of a controversial speed camera located on the outer ring road (périphérique) at Porte de Montreuil. The device, which was installed on August 24, 2026, to enforce a 30 km/h limit near a construction site, was decommissioned following reports of severe technical malfunctions.

Authorities confirmed that all traffic fines issued by the camera since its installation will be canceled. This decision follows legal intervention by the Rennes Prosecutor's Office, which invalidated the citations to ensure equality among road users. The malfunction was highlighted by the association ‘40 Millions d'automobilistes’, which observed 18 vehicles being flashed in less than five minutes, suggesting an abnormally high rate of enforcement.

The cancellation represents a significant loss of potential revenue for the state. The association estimated that if the device had operated normally, it could have generated approximately 274 million euros in annual fines.
