Paris speed camera fines canceled following technical issues

Authorities in Paris have announced that fines issued by a temporary construction speed camera at Porte de Montreuil will be canceled. The autonomous device, installed on August 24, was set to enforce a 30 km/h limit on a section of the Paris ring road (périphérique) where work was being conducted.

The decision follows significant public outcry and criticism from the association ‘40 Millions d'Automobilistes’, which labeled the device a ‘cash machine’ after observing 18 flashes in less than five minutes. Critics argued the camera was poorly positioned and potentially excessive in its revenue generation.

The Paris Police Prefecture attributed the cancellation to ‘technical difficulties’ that caused the device to operate intermittently and unreliably. While the fines will be voided, the 30 km/h speed limit remains in effect for the construction zone, and the camera is expected to be relocated.
