Paris Ring Road speed limit challenge reaches court
The Paris Administrative Court is reviewing a legal challenge regarding the 50 km/h speed limit on the Paris Ring Road (Périphérique). The appeal, initiated by approximately 500 road users and two motorists' associations, seeks to reinstate the previous 70 km/h limit that was implemented in October 2024.
During a hearing on September 29, the public rapporteur recommended the rejection of the request, stating that the legal arguments presented by the opponents were not well-founded. A formal decision is expected in October, though the case may face further appeals.
Data collected since the speed reduction suggests various environmental and safety impacts. Reports indicate a decrease in noise levels by approximately 2.6 to 2.7 dB at night and a roughly 6% reduction in nitrogen dioxide levels near the road. Additionally, the City of Paris reported significant improvements in traffic flow, noting a 19% decrease in congestion hours and a 24% reduction in accidents in early 2026 compared to the same period in 2024.
