South Korea Democratic Party leadership race heats up

Ahead of the Democratic Party’s nationwide congress on August 17, several senior lawmakers have announced bids for the party’s top committee. Lawmaker Park Sun‑won declared she will run for a senior committee seat, promising a party strong on security, the economy and citizens’ welfare. Former party leader Jung Cheong‑rae announced his resignation as chair and will also contest the leadership, positioning himself for a re‑election bid and urging rapid legislation to abolish the "supplementary investigative authority" before the congress. Jung’s move intensifies the ongoing "Myeong‑Cheong" faction clash between supporters of Lee Jae‑myung and his own camp. In parallel, lawmaker Kim Young‑ho entered the race, calling for an end to intra‑party division, pledging to unite the fractured party, and outlining reform measures such as a 161‑member special committee for livelihood issues, stronger youth participation and completion of prosecutorial reform. The candidacies reflect a broader struggle for control of the party ahead of the 2026 national elections.
