Parking fraud: ADAC warns of SMS and QR code scams
The ADAC has issued a warning regarding sophisticated fraud schemes targeting drivers through both digital messages and physical tampering at parking meters. Criminals are utilizing 'smishing' and 'quishing' techniques to steal sensitive financial data.
In one method, scammers send fraudulent SMS messages impersonating the parking app EasyPark. These messages claim there is an outstanding parking bill and threaten a 100 Euro fine if payment is not made immediately via a provided link. EasyPark has clarified that it does not send SMS notifications from unknown or private numbers and advises users to use only the official app.
In a second method, criminals are physically tampering with parking meters by placing fake QR code stickers over original ones. These imitation stickers, which often mimic the branding of services like EasyPark, redirect users to phishing websites designed to capture credit card information and other personal data. Experts warn that these scams can lead to unauthorized access to bank accounts or identity theft.
