Parkinson's disease: Early detection and non-invasive treatment advances
Medical experts and technological advancements are providing new insights into the management and detection of Parkinson's disease. Researcher Juan Ferrario notes that while 90% of cases manifest between ages 50 and 60, genetic factors can cause symptoms to appear as early as age 10 or in the 30s and 40s. He identifies muscle rigidity as the first detectable symptom, though it can be difficult to identify initially.
Ferrario emphasizes that while patients face motor challenges, they generally maintain cognitive health. He also highlighted the social challenges faced by those with the condition, specifically noting that many patients suffer from workplace discrimination.
In terms of treatment, High-Intensity Focused Ultrasound (HIFU) is emerging as a non-invasive alternative to traditional surgery. Guided by magnetic resonance imaging, this technique uses high-power sound waves to perform localized ablation on specific brain tissue responsible for movement malfunctions, such as the internal globus pallidus. Unlike deep brain stimulation, this method requires no incisions or electrode implants, often allowing patients to be discharged within 24 hours.
