Parkinson's medication shortage affects patients in Argentina

A shortage of LevoCal, a critical medication combining levodopa and carbidopa, has caused significant concern for approximately 130,000 Parkinson's patients across Argentina. The shortage originated after the multinational pharmaceutical company Pfizer decided to temporarily discontinue the production of the drug to redirect resources toward other areas, such as oncology treatments.

Medical professionals, including Dr. Ramiro Huber and provincial deputy Miguel Rabbia, have highlighted the severity of the situation. Because the drug has a short half-life, patients must take it every four hours to prevent the rapid onset of motor symptoms like rigidity, tremors, and loss of balance. Rabbia noted that while a national alternative exists, it only covers about 35 percent of the demand and may not be suitable for all patients.

Following widespread protests and demands for government intervention, Pfizer has communicated that the supply of the medication is expected to regularize in the national market starting in November, providing temporary relief to affected families.
