Parlatino Caribbean Commission meets in Dominican Republic

The Special Caribbean Commission of the Latin American and Caribbean Parliament (Parlatino) has convened an ordinary meeting in the Dominican Republic to address regional challenges. The session aims to evaluate regional initiatives and define collective actions for Caribbean nations.

Otami S. S. Thomasia, President of the Special Caribbean Commission, emphasized the need for increased cooperation among islands to strengthen their influence in international decision-making. She highlighted the vulnerabilities of small island states, noting their sensitivity to environmental, economic, and food crises due to limited economies and high dependence on tourism and imports.

Key agenda items include coastal erosion, sargassum seaweed proliferation, food security, and access to financing. Representatives from the United Nations Environment Programme also participated, sharing expertise on marine biodiversity and environmental management. Additionally, scientific projections regarding climate change effects and community adaptation strategies were presented.
