Thai Parliament cafeteria ceiling collapses, causing safety concerns

A section of the ceiling collapsed in the B2 level cafeteria of the Thai Parliament Building on Sunday, September 13. The incident caused significant damage to dining tables and chairs, but no injuries were reported as the area was empty during the holiday.

Vendors and officials have expressed concern regarding the cause, with many pointing to long-standing issues with water leaks and moisture accumulation in the facility. Amorn Pimarnmas, President of the Structural Engineers Association of Thailand, noted that potential causes could include water leaks, low-quality panels, improper installation, or lack of maintenance.

Siroj Paetphan, Secretary-General of the House of Representatives, has coordinated with the Department of Public Works and Town & Country Planning to conduct a thorough structural inspection. The cafeteria was temporarily closed to the public to allow for safety assessments and repairs, with reopening contingent on engineers confirming the stability of the surrounding structure.
