Parliamentary debates over tax exemptions in Moldova and Romania
In Moldova, the parliamentary economy, budget, and finance committee voted against a proposal by the Our Party (Partidul Nostru) to increase customs tax exemption thresholds for parcels and personal luggage. The initiative, presented by deputy Constantin Cuiumju, sought to raise the parcel exemption limit from 150 to 500 euros, land travel luggage limits from 300 to 600 euros, and air/maritime limits from 430 to 700 euros. Cuiumju argued that current limits do not account for inflation or the needs of citizens, particularly those receiving goods from family members working abroad.
In Romania, Parliament is reviewing a proposal to exempt specialized vehicles used by pastoral beekeepers from paying the road tax (rovinieta). The initiative, supported by members of UDMR, PSD, PNL, and USR, aims to reduce costs for beekeepers who must move hives between regions to follow seasonal blooms. While the proposal could benefit vehicles of various weights, the Economic and Social Council (CES) issued a negative opinion, noting that the initiative seeks to modify a law that is no longer in force.
