Paros: Man arrested for illegal shellfish harvesting
Authorities in Paros arrested a 57-year-old man for illegal shellfish harvesting following reports of unauthorized mollusks being placed in the sea near Dryou beach.
Coast Guard officials conducted discreet surveillance of the area and discovered 140 mesh bags containing mussels submerged in the water. The total weight of the seized shellfish was 1,570 kilograms.
Local primary sector authorities noted that the maritime area is not a designated production zone for live bivalve mollusks. Consequently, the shellfish are considered a risk to public health if consumed. The Coast Guard has seized the quantity and is conducting a preliminary investigation.
