Parque Cordillera infiltrates over 10,400 m³ of rainwater in Santiago’s pre‑cordillera

Intense rains in the second half of July allowed the Association of Municipalities Parque Cordillera to infiltrate more than 10,400 m³ of water—equivalent to four Olympic‑size swimming pools—into the soils of the Aguas de Ramón and San Carlos de Apoquindo parks in the Santiago metropolitan pre‑cordillera. The water‑capture works, including infiltration trenches, “medialunas” and drainage systems, were built in collaboration with Fundación Reforestemos, the Centro Deportivo Universidad Católica, the Municipalidad de Las Condes and other institutions to improve resilience against chronic drought, forest‑fire risk and climate change.

The projects are part of a broader restoration effort after a summer wildfire that burned more than 1,000 ha across San Carlos de Apoquindo and nearby Parque La Plaza Sur. In May, a volunteer campaign of over 300 participants constructed 240 m of trenches and 117 medialunas over 1.4 ha, helping to recover the highly threatened sclerophyllous forest ecosystem that exists in only five locations worldwide.
