Parque Humedal Los Batros identifies new queltehue nest

Environmental monitoring at Parque Humedal Los Batros in San Pedro de la Paz has identified a new nest of the common queltehue (Vanellus chilensis), also known as treile or tero, in the Las Torres sector. The eggs were found camouflaged directly on the ground among the vegetation.

To protect the species during this winter nesting season, authorities have cordoned off the area with security tape to prevent accidental damage to the eggs. Park administrators and local officials, including Anselmo Villagra, the Seremi of Housing and Urbanism for Biobío, have urged visitors to act responsibly.

Guidelines for visitors include staying on designated paths, respecting all safety perimeters, and keeping dogs on leashes. Officials noted that adult queltehues are highly territorial and protective of their nests, warning that loud alarm calls from the birds indicate a visitor is too close to a nesting site.
