Partido Popular adopts stricter migration policy in Spain

The Spanish Partido Popular (PP) has undergone a significant ideological shift toward a harder stance on migration, aligning its rhetoric more closely with the Vox party. Under the leadership of Alberto Núñez Feijóo, the party has proposed several restrictive measures.

Key proposals include the implementation of a points-based visa system, similar to those used in Australia, Canada, and the United Kingdom. Additionally, the PP advocates for stricter requirements for Spanish nationality, specifically increasing the required level of Spanish language proficiency.

The party also intends to limit the 'arraigo' legal mechanism to curb irregular immigration and has suggested reductions in basic social benefits, such as the Minimum Vital Income (IMV), citing concerns over potential fraud within the migrant population.
