Oviedo assault: Five arrested after attack on two activists

Five individuals have been arrested and a sixth identified following an assault on two activists from the AMA Asturies collective during the San Mateo festivities in Oviedo. The victims, Rubén Rosón and Jorge Fernández, were attacked in the Plaza de la Catedral after a group of youths attempted to tear down a rainbow flag and an anti-racism banner. The victims reported being subjected to homophobic and fascist insults during the physical assault.

The court has issued restraining orders against the suspects and prohibited them from contacting the victims. While the prosecution is investigating the incident as a potential hate crime, the defense maintains that the altercation was a spontaneous dispute fueled by alcohol and lacks any political or ideological motivation.

The incident has caused significant political tension in Asturias. Oviedo Mayor Alfredo Canteli initially faced criticism for describing the attack as an “anecdote” and suggesting the attackers were merely “young kids,” but he has since issued a formal statement condemning the violence in all its forms and supporting the victims.
