Partinico holds funerals for mother and son killed in cistern accident
Funerals were held in Partinico for Rosalia La Manna, 37, and her son Vincenzo Troia, 21, who died following a tragic accident in an underground cistern. The incident occurred in their garage on via Lorenzo Perosi when the pair entered the cistern to retrieve nets for the olive harvest.
The deaths were caused by the accumulation of carbon dioxide produced by vegetable residues within the cistern, which displaced breathable oxygen. During the funeral service at the Church of the Santissimo Salvatore, the local parish priest, Don Natale Centineo, described La Manna as a heroic mother who risked her life in an attempt to save her son.
A large procession accompanied the coffins through the streets of the town, attended by grieving relatives, friends, and community members.
