Partito Democratico faces leadership tensions and coalition friction
Internal tensions are rising within Italy's Partito Democratico (PD) regarding leadership and future electoral strategies. Reports suggest PD Secretary Elly Schlein may seek to extend her mandate indefinitely by bypassing current party statutes, which dictate that the process for electing a new secretary should begin now to prepare for the February 2027 expiration.
Simultaneously, friction has emerged between Schlein and Movimento 5 Stelle leader Giuseppe Conte. During appearances at the Festa dell'Unità, Conte has challenged the notion that the PD leader should represent all coalition allies. While Schlein aims to use upcoming events to bolster her media presence and path toward Palazzo Chigi, Conte has maintained a defiant stance, refusing to step aside and suggesting that 5 Star Movement members should vote for Schlein if they believe she is the most suitable candidate.
