Elly Schlein declares candidacy for Prime Minister at PD assembly

At the Democratic Party (PD) national assembly in Rome, Secretary Elly Schlein officially announced her candidacy for Prime Minister, stating she is ready to lead the coalition “with or without primaries.” Schlein emphasized that the priority must be establishing a shared program with progressive allies before deciding on leadership.

The assembly approved a statute change to extend Schlein's mandate until the 2027 general elections, ensuring continuity through the next political cycle. The vote for her candidacy received 578 votes in favor, 3 against, and 26 abstentions, primarily from the party's reformist wing.

During her speech, Schlein criticized the Meloni government, describing it as the “longest-lived but most inconclusive” administration, and accused it of ignoring economic struggles regarding wages and youth employment. She also addressed recent social protests, distinguishing between peaceful demonstrations and violent incidents, while calling for a unified progressive alliance to challenge the current government.
