PAS President claims US offered help to topple Malaysian government

PAS President Abdul Hadi Awang has claimed that the United States offered assistance to the party to topple the Malaysian government in 2014. Speaking at the 72nd PAS Muktamar, Hadi stated the alleged offer occurred during former US President Barack Obama’s visit to Malaysia, when several PAS leaders were invited to a meeting at the US Embassy in Kuala Lumpur.

Hadi alleged that US representatives discussed the possibility of helping PAS take over the administration. He noted that leaders present at the time, including Takiyuddin Hassan and Ahmad Samsuri Mokhtar, rejected the offer. He further claimed that a US ambassador later asked him who PAS would propose as Prime Minister, to which he responded by asking who the United States would support.

The United States Embassy in Malaysia has officially denied these claims, stating that the US has never sought to decide Malaysia’s political leadership and describing any contrary accounts as “false.”

In response to the allegations, various political figures and branches have taken action. Leaders from the PKR Setiawangsa and Bandar Tun Razak branches have lodged police reports, calling for investigations into whether the claims affect national sovereignty, security, or violate laws such as the Sedition Act. Critics have also urged Hadi to provide concrete evidence for such serious accusations.
