PAS and UMNO leaders discuss cooperation for Malay-Muslim unity
Leaders from PAS and UMNO are discussing potential cooperation aimed at strengthening Malay-Muslim unity and political stability in Malaysia. PAS Deputy President Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man stated that any political cooperation, including with Barisan Nasional, is carefully reviewed and guided by the Majlis Syura Ulama to ensure principles are not compromised.
UMNO Secretary-General Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki noted that efforts to bridge PAS and UMNO are not intended to revive the Muafakat Nasional pact, but rather to meet the aspirations of the Malay community for a more stable and harmonious political landscape. He confirmed that UMNO has accepted invitations to engage with PAS.
However, PAS Youth Chief Afnan Hamimi Taib Azamudden warned that such unity must not be “seasonal,” occurring only during elections or when facing common enemies. He attributed the previous failure of the Muafakat Nasional pact to “selfish” groups within both parties and urged for consistent cooperation based on the interests of the ummah rather than political maneuvering.
Additionally, the PAS Ulama Council's assembly emphasized the importance of continuing the “penyatuan ummah” (unity of the ummah) agenda to strengthen political power, despite challenges posed by racial politics and legal constraints.
