Armenia is navigating a complex geopolitical shift as it seeks closer ties with the European Union while maintaining economic links with Russia. During a meeting in Bishkek, Russian President Vladimir Putin warned Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan that pursuing EU membership could undermine Armenia's position and advantages within the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU). Putin noted that while Armenia has the sovereign right to choose its path, the incompatible regulatory, customs, and technical standards of the two blocs could disrupt established trade chains.

In response to recent trade restrictions imposed by Russia, the EU Council has approved temporary measures to liberalize trade for Armenian products. This decision aims to support the Armenian economy by allowing approximately 80 percent of its exports to benefit from zero-duty status. The liberalization regime is expected to be valid for two years, pending final approval from the European Parliament.

Despite these shifts, Russia remains Armenia's largest trading partner, accounting for roughly 30 percent of its total trade. While the EU offers potential for technical assistance and market access, the transition remains challenging due to Armenia's deep economic integration with the EAEU, which has contributed to a nearly threefold increase in the country's GDP over the last decade.
