Paso Bravo Reserve: 40 tons of marijuana seized in Paraguay
Security forces in Paraguay have seized 40,000 kilograms of pressed marijuana from 23 underground caches located within the Paso Bravo Reserve in the Concepción Department. The operation was a coordinated effort involving the Internal Defense Operations Command (CODI), the Joint Task Force (FTC), the Military Intelligence Battalion (BIMI), and the Public Ministry.
According to Prosecutor Pablo René Zárate, the seized narcotics have an estimated market value of approximately USD 6.5 million in Brazil. The extraction process was physically demanding, requiring five days of continuous work by the FTC due to difficult terrain and deteriorated roads. During the operation, authorities also recovered an abandoned Toyota Hilux left by smugglers and a field camp.
General Rufino Gaona, commander of CODI, described the seizure as a “golpe muy fuerte” (very strong blow) against drug trafficking networks in the northern region of the country. Intelligence efforts by the BIMI and the National Anti-Drug Secretariat (SENAD) are ongoing to determine if additional shipments or production centers exist in the area.
