Greece announces new housing subsidies and relocation incentives
The Greek government is implementing a series of housing and economic measures to address housing shortages and regional depopulation. Minister Domna Michailidou announced that the Relocation Program will expand on October 14, offering 10,000 euros to citizens who move permanently to specific rural areas, including Kilkis, Florina, Kastoria, Drama, Pella, Grevena, Kozani, Serres, Ioannina, and Thesprotia. The program has been simplified, no longer requiring proof of employment in the new location.
Additionally, the “Anakainizo” (Renovate) program will allow beneficiaries to submit documentation in October to receive a 50% advance on subsidies, which can reach up to 36,000 euros. The government is also preparing “Spiti mou 3” (My Home 3), a 2 billion euro initiative aimed at supporting first-time homebuyers with low-interest loans, featuring expanded income and age criteria.
To increase rental supply, the government is exploring a “build to rent” model and considering increased building density in urban areas. Meanwhile, PASOK has criticized the 2027 budget draft, arguing that reported surpluses are driven by high consumption and income taxes rather than genuine economic growth.
