PASOK criticizes Greek education policy and university legal crisis

PASOK-Kίνημα Αλλαγής has issued statements criticizing the Greek government regarding systemic issues in the education sector, specifically focusing on the housing crisis for teachers and the legal status of private universities.

Regarding the teaching profession, party representatives highlighted that thousands of substitute and newly appointed teachers face severe difficulties finding affordable housing. Many are forced to relocate hundreds of kilometers from their homes to areas with high rents and limited supply, often having to maintain two households. This crisis is exacerbated in tourist and island regions where short-term rentals drive up costs, leading to high resignation rates and unfilled positions, including 180 vacancies in Special Education.

Separately, the party addressed the legal fallout following a Council of State decision to revoke the operating licenses of three branches of foreign universities. PASOK described the situation as a “fiasco of unprecedented proportions,” arguing that the Pierrakakis law allowed for the “fast-track commercialization of higher education.” The party expressed concern for the hundreds of students who have already paid tuition and begun their studies, stating that the government must take full responsibility for the resulting instability.
