Greek opposition parties criticize government debt repayment strategy
Greek opposition parties are intensifying their criticism of the government's strategy regarding the early repayment of public debt.
PASOK-KINAL has attacked Finance Minister Kyriakos Pierrakakis, arguing that current budget surpluses are not an economic miracle but rather the result of increased tax burdens through VAT and uncontrolled inflation, which erodes the purchasing power of the middle class. The party warned that maintaining excessively high primary surpluses could act as a brake on the country's long-term economic growth and prosperity.
Simultaneously, SYRIZA official Nikos Pappas accused the New Democracy government of providing "half-truths" regarding debt management. Pappas questioned why the government is not utilizing European fiscal flexibilities, such as one-off measures and Discretionary Revenue Measures (DRMs), and why it is prioritizing the repayment of low-interest loans instead of more expensive debt. SYRIZA has called for an immediate parliamentary debate within the Economic Affairs Committee to demand transparency and a documented discussion on the country's fiscal trajectory.
