PASOK criticizes Greek government over Eurostat poverty and income data

PASOK spokesperson Kostas Tsoukalas has criticized Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, accusing him of ignoring Eurostat reports that show declining living conditions in Greece. According to the Eurostat report ‘Key figures on European living conditions 2026’, the risk of poverty or social exclusion in Greece rose to 27.5% in 2025, up from 26.3% in 2022, making it the second highest in the EU after Bulgaria.

Furthermore, Greece holds the third-lowest position in the EU for median disposable income in 2025, recorded at 13,612 PPS, which is approximately 60.2% of the EU average. Tsoukalas argued that despite government claims of economic upgrades, the country is failing to converge with the European average.

In a separate development, Tsoukalas announced that PASOK intends to submit a legislative proposal to establish a permanent mechanism for taxing excess corporate profits. The proposed measure aims to fund support systems against high energy costs and would target windfall profits rather than general corporate earnings.
