PASOK criticizes Greek government over teacher shortages in Kythira
PASOK has criticized the Greek government for failing to address teacher shortages, citing the situation in Kythira as an example of systemic mismanagement. According to Stefanos Parastatidis, the sector head for PASOK/Kinamallagas, the government is attempting to cover staffing gaps through administrative improvisations rather than proper hiring.
In Kythira, Education Consultants were reportedly transferred from Athens to teach subjects such as Mathematics, Physics, and Chemistry to fill vacancies. This measure is described as a ‘bureaucratic patent’ because the law governing consultants does not mandate teaching hours or designate them as reserve personnel.
Reports indicate that one month after the school year began, significant teaching hours remained uncovered at the General Lyceum of Kythira, including 31 hours of Mathematics and 14 hours of Chemistry. At the Kythira Gymnasium, weekly vacancies exceeded 40 hours, leaving some senior high school students without instruction in subjects required for national examinations.
