PASOK criticizes Greek government over private debt measures
The PASOK opposition party has launched a sharp political attack against the New Democracy government regarding recent economic measures, specifically the new 120-installment plan for private debt. PASOK leaders, including Nikos Androulakis and Kostas Tsoukalas, argue that the government's measures are insufficient and serve more as communication management than substantive relief.
Critics from PASOK contend that the current plan fails to address the core issues of private debt because it does not include the cancellation of interest and surcharges, unlike the proposals put forward by the opposition. They further claim the government is reacting to political pressure and polling rather than addressing the needs of citizens facing high costs of living, energy prices, and housing crises.
Additionally, PASOK has called for structural changes, such as a permanent mechanism for taxing excess profits and reforms to the special consumption tax on fuel to return surplus VAT revenue to consumers. The party also criticized the government's handling of the housing crisis and the effectiveness of the extrajudicial settlement mechanism.
