PASOK faces internal rift over New Democracy cooperation

Internal tensions have surfaced within PASOK following an article by Athens Mayor Haris Doukas, which urged the party to uphold its convention decision to refuse cooperation with New Democracy. Doukas criticized a “social democracy of assimilation,” arguing that the party should pursue a “democratic radical realism” and offer a distinct alternative to the Right rather than acting as a supplementary force.

This stance prompted a public rebuttal from Panagiotis Loukos, a close associate of Anna Diamantopoulou. Loukos challenged the idea that convention decisions are unchangeable, stating that “convention decisions are not holy scriptures” and noting that political strategies must adapt to changing realities, such as the emergence of new political actors.
