Greece political opposition criticizes Mitsotakis over energy crisis

Greek opposition parties, including SYRIZA and PASOK, have launched sharp criticisms against Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis following his weekly Sunday review. The opposition accuses the government of presenting a “virtual reality” that ignores the economic hardships faced by citizens due to the energy crisis.

SYRIZA has criticized the Prime Minister’s handling of rising fuel and heating oil costs, arguing that the government lacks effective measures to protect households. The party has proposed implementing a cap on refinery profit margins and imposing an emergency tax on excess profits to combat inflation. They also called for a reduction in the Special Solidarity Contribution (EFK) to lower the burden on citizens.

PASOK spokesperson Kostas Tsoukalas also attacked the Prime Minister, stating that the government’s narrative of success contradicts the reality of rising costs for electricity, gas, and fuel, which reportedly cost households and businesses an additional 450 million euros monthly. Meanwhile, Mitsotakis has left the door open for potential new support measures but emphasized the need to maintain fiscal stability, noting that the government must not “shake the bank.”
