PASOK proposes VAT cuts for Greek islands and fishing subsidies
PASOK leader Nikos Androulakis has submitted two amendments to the Greek Parliament aimed at supporting island residents and the fishing industry.
The first proposal seeks to extend a 30% VAT reduction to all Greek islands with a population of up to 3,100 inhabitants, effective January 1, 2027. Androulakis estimated the fiscal cost of this measure to be between 20 and 25 million euros. For larger islands with populations between 3,100 and 130,000, the party proposes a mechanism to return a portion of VAT revenues to the local communities to fund essential services such as healthcare, education, and infrastructure.
The second amendment proposes an emergency subsidy of 0.50 euros per liter of fuel for professional fishers, intended to run from March 1 through December 31, 2026.
During parliamentary debates, Minister Vasilis Kikilias defended the government's record, citing existing measures like port upgrades and transport subsidies, while questioning the funding sources for PASOK's proposed revenue return mechanism.
