Greece to repay €12.8 billion in debt early to save on interest
Greek Finance Minister Kyriakos Pierrakakis has defended the government's decision to proceed with an early repayment of approximately €12.84 billion in public debt. Pierrakakis stated that for every €1 billion repaid ahead of schedule, the country saves roughly €30 million in annual interest, totaling an estimated €370 million in yearly savings and €2.6 billion over a seven-year period.
The Minister emphasized that this strategy is a matter of fiscal responsibility aimed at reducing the debt burden for future generations and creating fiscal space to support citizens and economic growth. He clarified that EU fiscal rules prevent these specific funds from being converted into direct social benefits or handouts, but the reduction in interest costs provides greater economic freedom and stability.
The announcement has sparked political debate. The Ministry of National Economy and Finance dismissed opposition criticism as paradoxical, noting that the current policy aims to reverse the debt escalation seen in previous decades. Meanwhile, the PASOK party criticized the Minister, arguing that the government's stance ignores the economic history of the country and the responsibilities of previous administrations.
