Passenger threats trigger emergency responses on two US flights

Two separate incidents involving threatening passengers on US flights triggered emergency responses in Milwaukee and Miami this week.

A United Airlines flight diverted to Milwaukee Mitchell International Airport due to weather, during which a passenger reportedly threatened to commit a crime if not allowed to disembark. Law enforcement responded, and the flight's final leg to Chicago was canceled. United Airlines provided affected passengers with reimbursements, hotel accommodations, and rebooking options.

In a separate incident at Miami International Airport, Alaska Airlines Flight 305 experienced disruptions while taxiing for a flight to Seattle. Two passengers reportedly threatened flight attendants, prompting the aircraft to return to the gate. While authorities later determined there was no credible threat, passengers were required to leave the aircraft as a precaution while law enforcement removed the disruptive individuals. The passengers have been temporarily banned from flying with Alaska Airlines.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) noted that passengers who assault, threaten, or interfere with airline crew members can face civil penalties of up to $43,658 per violation, in addition to potential criminal charges. The agency has received more than 830 reports of unruly passengers so far this year.
