Study Links Frequent TV Watching to Reduced Brain Volume and White‑Matter Damage
A longitudinal analysis of about 1,700 adults from the Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities (ARIC) study found that participants who reported watching television "very often" in midlife (average age 53) showed measurable brain changes more than two decades later. MRI scans revealed smaller volumes in regions linked to memory, planning, visual processing, and emotional regulation, as well as increased white‑matter hyperintensities—markers associated with aging, stroke risk, cognitive decline and early Alzheimer’s disease. By contrast, participants who spent similar amounts of time sitting at work exhibited larger frontal and occipital lobes and fewer white‑matter changes, suggesting that the mental engagement of work may protect brain structure. The associations persisted after adjusting for physical activity, diabetes, body‑mass index, smoking, and alcohol use, and were more pronounced in men. The study was coordinated by researchers at the University of Southern California Dornsife College of Letters, Arts and Sciences and published in the journal Alzheimer’s & Dementia: Journal of the Alzheimer’s Association.
