Brazil reports multiple high-profile criminal convictions

Various judicial rulings and criminal proceedings have been reported across Brazil, involving a range of violent crimes and legal outcomes.

In Rio de Janeiro, Vitor Teodoro Cossich was sentenced to 24 years for the murder of social scientist Bárbara Vergetti Martins de Souza, a trans woman killed following a financial dispute. Separately, a former Army lieutenant, Vinicius Ghidetti de Moraes Andrade, received a 63-year sentence for the 2008 execution of three youths in the Providência community. Additionally, a defendant in the Marielle Franco case will remain in a federal prison for another year.

In Bahia, George Anderson Santos da Silva was sentenced to nearly 60 years for the feminicide of Tainara Santos, a Quilombola woman. In Alagoas, Edivaldo de Lima Santos received 25 years for the asphyxiation and drowning of his partner, Milene Cristina Gracindo da Silva. In Maranhão, a mother was sentenced to 21 years for the poisoning of her six-year-old autistic daughter.

Other notable cases include the conviction of five men in Belo Horizonte for the torture and murder of a recycler in a “crime tribunal,” and a 45-year sentence in Rio Grande do Sul for the murder of a woman by her ex-partner. In Manaus, defendants face trial for the murder of a nanny, while in Santa Catarina, a teacher's conviction for providing false certificates was upheld.
