Passport authentication and legal identity distinctions
Technical and legal distinctions exist between the authenticity of a passport and an individual's underlying legal identity. While a passport serves as a high-security government-issued document, its legitimacy is separate from the civil registration, nationality records, and lawful name changes that establish a person's broader identity.
From a technical perspective, successful data reading from an electronic passport chip—such as retrieving biographical details or a digital facial image—does not inherently prove the document is authentic. True verification requires validating digital signatures, establishing certificate trust, and performing anti-cloning checks according to International Civil Aviation Organization standards. A successful scan or the display of a facial image confirms data access but does not independently confirm that the issuing government signed the information or that the document is cryptographically trustworthy.
