When border police scan a passport, the process involves much more than a simple data reading. Electronic readers extract information from the machine-readable zone, including name, date of birth, nationality, and document expiration. For biometric passports, the system also accesses the electronic chip to verify the owner's photograph and ensure document authenticity.

The system cross-references this data with multiple national and international databases. At Schengen external borders, officials use the Schengen Information System (SIS) to check for alerts regarding wanted persons, entry bans, missing individuals, or judicial measures. Additionally, the Interpol database is used to identify stolen or lost travel documents.

Officers do not automatically see a traveler's entire personal history, such as bank accounts or phone contents. Instead, the screen displays specific data relevant to border control and security alerts. If a document was previously reported lost or stolen, it remains flagged as invalid, and attempting to use it can lead to detention and further investigation.
