Pastaza officials review water tariff increases following public backlash
Authorities in Pastaza, Ecuador, are reviewing a new water tariff structure following widespread public opposition and requests from social and commercial sectors to repeal Ordinance No. 084-2026. Representatives from the Chamber of Commerce and various social organizations met with Mayor Germán Flores to demand a return to previous rates, citing significant economic impacts on households and businesses.
Washington Vaca, president of the Chamber of Commerce, noted that some users have seen increases exceeding 344%, citing specific examples where bills rose from 15 to 75 dollars or 45 to 155 dollars. The Ombudsman's Office has also requested the technical and administrative documentation supporting the hike to assess its economic impact.
Mayor Germán Flores explained that the update is necessary to address debts from previous administrations and ensure service continuity. He noted that the new scheme includes a sewage component that was not previously charged and aims to regulate excessive consumption. While the Mayor stated the ordinance cannot be immediately repealed, he committed to a thorough review and the potential adjustment of costs per cubic meter and consumption tiers. Technical working groups have been established to address the issue.
