Pasto authorities investigate teen death linked to vaping

Health authorities in Pasto, Colombia, have launched an epidemiological investigation following the death of a 16-year-old resident, reportedly linked to the frequent use of electronic cigarettes and vapes. The teenager presented with severe respiratory symptoms and passed away at the Hospital Infantil Los Ángeles.

Daniana de La Cruz, the Secretary of Health for Pasto, warned that these devices are not safe alternatives to traditional smoking, noting that they contain toxic chemicals that enter the lungs without filtration, potentially causing severe tissue damage or death.

In response, local authorities have activated a health alert and increased surveillance in schools, universities, and commercial establishments to detect potential lung injuries. Health officials are urging the public, particularly parents and caregivers, to monitor for symptoms such as persistent cough, difficulty breathing, chest pain, fever, and fatigue. Additionally, INVIMA has issued a sanitary alert regarding the illegal commercialization of certain products, such as Purlyf Sund, in the country.
