Pasto faces restaurant fire and widespread forest fires
The city of Pasto, Colombia, is facing significant fire-related emergencies, including a major blaze at a well-known restaurant in the El Potrerillo market food court. While the fire caused substantial material damage, the Pasto Fire Department successfully contained the flames, preventing the fire from spreading to adjacent commercial stalls. No injuries or fatalities were reported in the incident.
Separately, the region is struggling with a surge in forest fires. Since June, the municipality has recorded 45 forest fires and 125 burnings, affecting critical environmental areas such as the Janacatú natural reserves and the Galeras Flora and Fauna Sanctuary. Fire Department Commander Ricardo Méndez noted that approximately 98% of these events are linked to human activity.
The environmental damage has also led to water scarcity, with 24 rural districts currently experiencing supply difficulties. Local authorities have urged citizens to prioritize essential water consumption and avoid wasteful activities.
