Pastor investigated in Mato Grosso prison smuggling probe dies

Pastor Nivaldo de Almeida, a target of the ‘Operação Fariseus’ investigation, has died from cancer in Cuiabá. He was under investigation by the Civil Police for alleged involvement with a criminal faction in Mato Grosso.

The investigation, launched in July, suggests that Nivaldo and his wife, Orminda Carlos de Barcelos Almeida, used a religious project to gain access to prison units, including the Central Penitentiary of the State (PCE). Authorities allege the family used this access to provide logistical, financial, and communication support to gang members, including smuggling prohibited items like cell phones and chargers.

The couple's daughter, Rhavenna Barcelos de Almeida, was placed under preventive detention. Investigators claim she maintained a relationship with a fugitive gang leader. The family faces various allegations, including criminal organization, corruption of minors, torture, and money laundering.
