Pat Aiyenuro predicts broader medal spread at 2026 Commonwealth Fencing Championships in Lagos

Pat Aiyenuro, president of British Fencing and member of the International Fencing Federation executive committee, said the 2026 Commonwealth Fencing Championships in Lagos will see a more even distribution of medals. The event, scheduled for 9‑14 August 2026, marks the first time a senior Commonwealth fencing tournament is hosted in Africa, with competitions to be held at the Rugby School in Atlantic City, Lagos.

Aiyenuro noted England’s historic dominance – it won 57 medals, including 22 gold, at the 2022 London edition – but highlighted the growing competitiveness of other Commonwealth nations such as India, Jamaica, Wales, Australia, South Africa, Canada, Singapore, Mauritius, Kenya and host nation Nigeria. She expects tighter contests across all three weapons and a wider medal spread.

She praised Nigeria’s development in organizing international competitions, saying the championships will raise the sport’s visibility, improve coaching and officiating standards, create volunteer opportunities, boost tourism revenue and inspire young athletes, while also showcasing Nigeria’s capacity to host major sporting events.
