Pat McAfee cites security concerns and FBI advice following Utah controversy
ESPN personality Pat McAfee has addressed recent controversies involving his appearance on College GameDay at the University of Utah. McAfee expressed feeling “uncomfortable” and unsafe after the university posted an Instagram video featuring students making impressions of him, which he felt undermined his security while appearing before large crowds.
McAfee revealed that federal authorities had previously advised him to wear a bulletproof vest following the September 2025 assassination of political activist Charlie Kirk at Utah Valley University. He noted that the recent social media content from the university amplified negative sentiments toward him at a time of heightened personal security concerns.
In response to the backlash, the University of Utah issued a statement taking “full accountability” for the video, which has since been deleted. ESPN has expressed support for McAfee, stating that the safety of their crew and fans remains a top priority. McAfee also reported receiving death threats on social media, prompting him to share his perspective on the challenges of maintaining personal security as a high-profile media figure.
