Pat White to have No. 5 jersey retired at West Virginia University
West Virginia University will retire Pat White’s No. 5 jersey this Saturday before the Mountaineers’ season opener against Coastal Carolina. The ceremony honors the former quarterback for his significant impact on the program, which helped return the team to the national stage during his tenure.
White noted that the university had to adjust its longstanding rules regarding number retirement to grant him this honor, as he did not meet the standard requirements despite his legendary status. Current head coach and former coach Rich Rodriguez praised White, stating that he made an indelible impact on the program that people are still discussing nearly two decades later. Rodriguez highlighted White’s team-first mentality and his role in leading the team to major milestones, such as the 2006 Sugar Bowl.
