Pataz: Two dead in armed attack at mine concession
An armed attack at a mine in the Santa María sector of Pataz, La Libertad, has resulted in two deaths and two serious injuries. The incident occurred within a concession area belonging to Compañía Minera Poderosa, specifically in a zone assigned to an artisanal miner with whom the company holds an exploration and exploitation contract.
Authorities reported that the exchange of gunfire took place inside a mine shaft. Police and military personnel from the Pataz Unified Command (CUPAZ) arrived at the scene and discovered individuals attempting to remove the bodies from the site. The deceased have been identified as Jherwun Cachique Ishuiza and Marcial Ojanama Gonzáles, while the injured were transported to Trujillo for specialized medical care.
Compañía Minera Poderosa condemned the act, characterizing illegal mining as organized crime that uses violence to illicitly seize mineral resources. This violence follows a recent 60-day extension of the state of emergency in the Pataz province, intended to combat ongoing extortion and armed conflicts between factions fighting for control of illegal gold mining sites.
