Monsignor Mario Merenda, dean of Cosenza clergy, dies at 91

Monsignor Mario Merenda, the dean of the presbyterate of the Archdiocese of Cosenza-Bisignano, has died at the age of 91. He passed away in a hospital in Paola, leaving a significant mark on the religious and social life of the Calabria region.

Ordained on January 3, 1960, Merenda was the oldest priest in the diocese in terms of both age and years of service. He was recognized as an intellectual priest who remained deeply engaged with social issues, volunteerism, and the transformations of the Church following the Second Vatican Council. He was known for his accessibility, even making his phone number public to offer support and listening to those in need.

His funeral services are scheduled to take place at the Cosenza Cathedral, following a period of prayer at the Sant’Aniello parish.
